The guide was amazing and very knowledgeable. This tour was somber but so important. Our guide was excellent. The buses never showed up at the end of the tour and we all thought Viator should arrange shuttles instead of relying on city buses. Not the tour guides fault we had to walk to the train station!!
This was an excellent tour and a good use of the time allocated to see such a large and important site. Operator (James) was polite, knowledgeable and organized. Highly recommended.
James was our guide for the day and was very considerate in making sure that everyone's needs were met, reading the group (e.g. giving breaks from walking as necessary) and that he was communicating clearly for all to understand. The information he provided was thoughtful, thought-provoking, and respectful of the site/memorial. I personally thought his purported Welsh accent was a little to Australian-sounding for my tastes (kidding, James!). James was great, and I would recommend him to anyone.
I have been to Dachau before, but learned little because I did not have a guide. James was our guide and shuttled a couple dozen people on the train from Munich to Dachau, then marched us very quickly through the site. His knowledge of the time was excellent - I learned a lot from his initial 10 minute synopsis of WWII and the Third Reich. However, he speaks very quickly in his Welsh accent, which makes it difficult to stick with his explanations. Dachau is crowded - really crowded with tourists! We were given little time to absorb any of the information or sites. The tour was very informative, but James did not like being asked any questions - he would either answer curtly, or say that he would cover it later. He did not seem open to learning anything new about this challenging topic. If you really want to see an interesting concentration camp, go to Mauthausen near Linz Austria. You don't need a guide there - everything is explained in both German and English and you really get to know individual people and stories through the excellent, in depth displays. Mauthausen has much more left of the original camp and you really feel like you are 'there'. Most people come away from Dachau with a bit of an empty feeling, but Mauthausen changes your soul.
James is an excellent and respectful guide. He is extremely knowledgeable about the camp and the history around it and my group walked away with new knowledge. A big thank you to him for being so helpful.
We signed up for a tour because we wanted the kids to be able to understand what they were seeing and be able to ask questions. While the guide was nice, he spoke so quickly and did not attempt to tall to the kids at all or explain things in a way they might understand. They had no idea what he was talking about half the time. Honestly, I wasn"t always completely sure! It was rushed and I wish we had just done it on our own.
Our tour was excellent! James was very well versed in his knowledge about WWII, concentration camps in general, and especially Dachau. He set a very respectful tone and it was obvious that he had such a healthy respect for a place with such a dark and emotional history.
