Stop At: Maropeng Visitor Centre, R400 off R563 Hekpoort Road Sterkfontein, Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site 1911 South Africa

We head off to Maropeng meaning, “Returning to the place of origin”. Maropeng is situated on a World Heritage site known as The Cradle of Humankind. Maropeng provides visitors with a rare opportunity to view original fossils as well as ancient artefacts. This tour shows you how humans have evolved over millions of years. The tour also focuses on the three elements; Air, Water and Fire. These are vital elements needed for life. There is an exciting boat ride that takes you back in time to when the world began, while showing you the importance of the 3 vital elements. You get to see an Audio-visual presentation of how the earth and its continents were formed millions of years ago. There are also graphic panels and real mannequin recreations of original fossils.

Stop At: Sterkfontein Caves Rd. Kromdraai Road Off the R563, Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site South Africa

Here you will do a guided tour into a cave where fossils were found. This unique experience takes 45min to 1hr and is not too hard on the body. There are 15 major

fossil sites in the Cradle of Humankind of which the Sterkfontein Caves is the richest. About 1000 hominid fossils have been discovered at Sterkfontein Caves. More than a third hominid fossils ever found, came from this area and in the Cradle of Humankind. Within the caves, scientists have discovered many hominid and other animal fossils which you can see, that is dated back to more than 4-million years ago, to the birth of humanity. There are a few animal fossils still visible in the walls of the cave. The most important and most famous of these fossils found in this area are “Mrs Ples”, a 2.3-million-year-old Australopithecus skull, and “Little Foot”, which is almost complete Australopithecus skeleton that is more than 3-million years old.
