Stop At: Jinshanling Great Wall, Chengde Shi, Luanping County 068250 China
Depart from a central meeting point and settle back for a 3-hour bus ride through the Chinese countryside. Jinshanling, further away from Beijing than other sections of the wall, has been spared the crowds, so you’ll be guaranteed a quieter and more adventurous encounter with the ancient stone barricade.
Jinshanling also offers the wall’s finest hiking trail, stretching 3.7 miles (6 kilometers). Your guide waits at the other end, so you can walk at your own pace. Take time to linger over the impressive restoration, with 15 watchtowers and picturesque views over the ruins. Or, you can opt to take a cable car part of the way (own expense).
The tour also takes a peek at the steep and scenic ruins of the Simatai section of the Great Wall, which is rugged and unrestored. Compare both sections of the world-famous landmark in areas that few tourists get the opportunity to visit.

Iris, our guide was really information with a good sense of humour. Thanks Iris for make this pleasant
My husband and I joined this tour in January 2019. We were a group of about 6 travelers total, along with our driver and our guide, Jen. Jen was amazing! She was very informative and a lot of fun to talk with about both the history of the Great Wall and the culture in Beijing. She even gave us recommendations for other places to visit in the city as well as a few restaurants to eat at. We had dinner at one those restaurants that night and it was one of our best meals in Beijing. The Great Wall itself was such an incredible experience. Besides our group, we only saw a handful of others walking the wall at Jinshanling that morning and felt that we mostly had it to ourselves. Driving an extra hour was definitely worth it. We're so happy we joined this tour and would recommend it to anyone else.
We had great weather which I'm sure made a big difference. In any event, the experience is practically guaranteed to be one you'll never forget. And if you stay alert and with a little bit of luck, you'll see these amazing birds called the Chinese Pheasant with about a 1.5 metert wing span and a very long, thin tail that fly low, swoop then practically crash land into the trees. Apparently some people who have visited the Great Wall many times have no idea they are even there. But I saw five, and a few other people I met saw some too. So keep your eyes peeled!
This was an amazing experience. The views from the wall were amazing. Enjoyed the hike. Our guide Jen was very personable and helpful.
An excellent day and a great section of the Great Wall to hike! The pick-up spot was convenient and the bus was on time. The ride was pleasant and there was a supply and rest stop along the way. When we reached Jinshanling, we received an orientation and a review of the map. We than had three hours to hike a section of the wall. It was a moderate hike with a few steep up and downs, but nothing too challenging. There was enough time to complete the hike with a few of the faster people having time to extend their hike. There were opportunities along the wall to buy water, beer, ice cream, and souvenirs. This is not a common hiking spot so not at all crowded and excellent photo opportunities!
Highly recommend this hike - while challenging, it is so worth it! Not crowded with great views and you get the chance to go at your own pace. Jen was prompt with pick up and offered facts about the Wall on our drive out. She made sure everyone was prepared and checked in after to see how our experience was.
I wanted a challenging section of the Great Wall and this was exactly what I was looking for. We were able to explore this area at our own pace. The wall is restored in some sections and unrestored in others. The scenery of the wall and the hillsides were spectacular, especially in spring when the trees are flowering. Our tour guide Jen was very informative about the area and it's history . I especially want to thank her for helping me retrieve my phone when I forgot it on the bus.
